Pennsylvania Southern Railroad Train Descriptions
100 series
Trains 101-149 (odd numbers, southbound)
These trains run from north staging to south staging. In Pittsburgh, they set out cars for Pittsburgh, the N&W, the CR and P&LE interchanges, Bridgeville, and Houston. They take all cars headed for south staging. At Washington, the cars for Washington, Baker, West Union, Waynesburg, Canonsburg, and Wheeling are set out and any cars for south staging are picked up. The trains then head for south staging.
Trains 102-148 (even numbers, northbound)
These trains run from south staging to north staging. In Washington, they set out cars for Waynesburg, West Union, Baker, Washington, Canonsburg, and Wheeling. They take all cars headed for north staging. At Pittsburgh, the cars for Pittsburgh, the N&W, the CR and P&LE interchanges, and Houston are set out and any cars for north staging are picked up. The trains then head for north staging.
200 series trains
These are locals that switch industries along the way. Odd number trains originate at Washington, switch West Union and Waynesburg, then turn to return north to Washington. Even number trains originate in Waynesburg and switch Waynesburg, West Union, and Baker. They terminate at Washington.
300 series trains
These are N&W trains that run between Pittsburgh and Wheeling.
AJ trains
AJ (Alpha Jet) trains run between Wheeling and North Yard. They will swap blocks of cars at Pittsburgh.
400 series trains
These are locals that run between Pittsburgh and Washington. They either drop blocks of cars at Bridgeville or switch Bridgeville industries. Northbound trains also switch Canonsburg while southbound trains switch Houston.
500 series unit trains
Trains 570 and 571 are a unit rock train that runs from south staging to Thayer Sand & Gravel at Houston then back to south staging.
Trains 596 and 597 are a mine run that take empty coal hoppers from the power plant in Pittsburgh to the mine at Waynesburg and brings loaded coal hoppers from the coal mine to the power plant.
Trains 598 and 599 run on alternate schedules. Train 598 is either an auto parts train that runs from south to north staging or a coal train that runs from south staging to the steel mill interchange at Bridgeville. At Bridgeville, the coal loads are delivered and empty ore hoppers are picked up and taken to north staging. Train 599 is either an auto parts train that runs from north to south staging or an ore train that runs from north staging to the steel mill interchange at Bridgeville. At Bridgeville, the ore loads are delivered and empty coal hoppers are picked up and taken to south staging.
Trail Van trains
TV-1 runs from Pittsburgh to south staging as a piggyback train or in alternate sessions an autorack train. TV-2 runs from south staging to Pittsburgh as an autorack train or in alternate sessions as a piggyback train.
Miscellaneous
Interchange runs take place as needed. CR and P&LE run from north staging and back.
Any scheduled train operating between Pittsburgh and Washington may fill to tonnage limits with cars for the other yard. Extras are also run as needed to move traffic between yards.
Various extra coal, grain, and intermodal traffic runs as needed.
Wheeling locals run as needed.
Yard switchers switch the yards and industries at Pittsburgh and Washington.
